Frequently Asked Questions
What is IFSC code?
IFSC (Indian Financial System Code) is an 11-character alphanumeric code assigned by the Reserve Bank of India to identify every bank branch in India. The first 4 characters represent the bank, the 5th is always 0, and the last 6 identify the specific branch.
How many digits are in an IFSC code?
An IFSC code has exactly 11 characters — 4 letters (bank code) + 1 digit (always 0) + 6 alphanumeric characters (branch code). For example, HDFC0001234.
Is IFSC code same as branch code?
No. The branch code is only the last 6 characters of the IFSC code. The full IFSC code includes the bank identifier (first 4 characters) plus a zero in the 5th position.
Can IFSC code change?
Yes, IFSC codes can change when banks merge or branches are restructured. For example, after the 2020 bank mergers, many Allahabad Bank, Syndicate Bank, and other merged bank branches received new IFSC codes.
Where to find IFSC code on cheque?
The IFSC code is printed on the top of a cheque leaf, usually next to the MICR code. It's also available on your bank passbook, account statement, and net banking portal.
